Vanessa Tan , MS MFT

Associate Marriage and Family Therapist

I was born and raised in Singapore by a Chinese family. When I was younger, I found myself trapped in a toxic first relationship. I lost myself, my values, and my relationships with friends and family. Due to the emotional wounds that occurred then, I brought that trauma and negativity into the relationships that followed. Mental health resources were not as accessible in my culture so I made a conscious choice to seek out therapy when I knew that there was still much to be done for my emotional and mental health.

My personal journey with therapy has been a very liberating one as I came to understand the roots of the shame and anxiety I experienced in my life. I became more aware of how my culture and life experiences shaped the way in which I deal with life situations as well as how I interact with others. Having that understanding and self-awareness enhanced my way of communicating with the people in my life which led to increased honest conversations and closer relationships.

I believe that the early experiences of an individual inform their sense of self, behavior, and view of the world. As your therapist, I am interested in exploring how your childhood and past experiences have molded your current methods of interpersonal communication.  I will also help you identify the emotions attached to how you communicate. I acknowledge that your stories are true to your experiences and you are the expert in your own life. I will be a compassionate supporter of you as you begin this journey of self-discovery and navigating relationships. Our sessions together will be warm, engaging, and safe. Reconstructing your stories can be a challenging emotional process and I will work collaboratively, helping you experience more freedom and more successful relationships in your life.
